“AROS Vision” is a 68k distribution based on nightly builds (AROS 68k) and added lots of 68k components and applications/tools. From the view of a application or game AROS 68k is like 3.1. so many programs already run on it. And it not only runs on emulation (UAE) but also on real classic hardware and the FPGA Arcade. In this way AROS 68k (and my distribution) create the bridge between the 68k community and the AROS camp. The advantage is that more and more modern components are getting to the 68k community, on the other hand AROS wins users and developers and 68k can be integrated as emulation. In this manual I will describe how to install it and show you many of the integrated components.
When you do not already use UAE in a form I will show you how to install and config WinUAE that is propably the best version of UAE. But there are also other versions like FS-UAE (Mac, Linux) that also can run AROS Vision. In the first step you have to download WinUAE.
Download and setup WinUAE then start WinUAE. You find a detailed description here.
When you have finished configuration then start it. If it goes well then you will see the next picture.
At the start you see different components. At the bottom you see Amistart, the control component where you see the time and can start software. Then you see “Limpidclock”, a calendar with appointments, Netsurf (a browser), Ramdisk, TKUnpacker (GUI for Packers) and by doubleclicking on “System” you can see all files.
Limpidclock-Config showing some appointments.
With TKUnpacker you can easily unpack GZip or lha archives
By pushing on the green buttons you can start different programs.
Netsurf is a browser for 68k with advanced features.
By doubleclicking on “System” you can reach all installed software.
Next I will describe you many of the installed components. They are structured in directories. Audio with audio related software, Addons includes “AMOS Pro”, Demos includes lots of demos, in Developer are compilers and script languages, Emulation includes emulators, then Games, Internet (Internet-related software), Tools, Utilities, System, Prefs (Preferences), WHDGames (WHDLoad Games) and Video (graphic related software). In “Added Components” are the source-files of all integrated components.
Below I show you some of the audio applications that are installed in AROS Vision.
In Demos are a lot of demos to start and watch. Some examples below.
scene demos the amiga was and is famous for
For developers are a lot of compilers and script languages preinstalled. Here you only find a short overview with screenshots, in the near future I will create detailled pages for the languages. AMOS Pro is in “Addons”, all other in “Developer”.
Additionally there are Python, Lua and Rexx for scripting integrated.
In directory “Emulation” there are some emulators. Examples are emulators for Gameboy, MasterGear and PCEngine. Screenshots below.
In games you find sqrx and sqrx2
In “Internet” there are lots of software for internet including browser, email, chat, twitter and many others.
System includes system related software including CLI, FixFonts or FTManager.
In Prefs are all preferences. Some examples below.
Zune (MUI) Prefs. The whole GUI is created in Zune so the preferences are very important.
In tools you find software like ignition (spreadsheet), MakeCD (burning CD), Simplefind (GUI for searching files) and TKUnpacker (GUI for unpacking archives)
In Video you find graphic related software.
In Utilities you find some useful software. Examples are Annotate (Editor) and Opus4
In WHDGames I have included “Lure of the temptress” as example for WHDLoad games (more below)
Now more informations that are interesting for the user. First some tips to optimize the environment.
To change locale: I have precreated different “locale” files in directory “locales”. Simply copy the suited locale preferences file to “Sys:Prefs/Env-Archive/Sys”. The original locale prefs from 3.1. work.
To change input (keyboard): Put “SetKeyboard xxx” in “User-Startup”. xxx can be pc104_usa, pc105_al, pc105_cz, pc105_d, pc105_dk, pc105_f, pc105_fin, pc105_nl. Example is “SetKeyBoard pc105_d” changes to german keyboard.
Arexx can be added by copying RexxMast in C and rexxsyslib.library in Libs (from original installations).
Copy “Installer” in C (from original installation) to add full installer support.
PDF, most graphic files, MP2/MP3, HTML and so on can be viewed by doubleclick on the icons. AVI cannot be shown by doubleclick but either by using VAMP (directory Video) or by starting “ffplay” from shell.
Screenblanker can be changed by doubleclick on “CM” in directory “WBStartup”.
Certain programs like AmigaWriter have problems with high colour-depth. So use not more than 16bit.
Final Calc needs original rexxsyslib.library
Sometimes programs work from shell, so try starting from shell when doubleclick creates error
68040+68060 with MMU is now working. No JIT and no 32Bit RAM (means no RTG, best is to delete screenmode prefs file)
Shell can be started by rightclick. The commands are identical and much more commands included. More informations will follow.
WHDLoad is preinstalled with ROM Replacement. Compatibility-List is here.
It can be changed between Wanderer and Scalos by changing the file “startup-sequence” in directory “S”. Scalos has lots of modern features. Further description is here. Some screenshots below.
There are different GUI-Systems included, that are Intuition, Zune (MUI), Classact, Feelin, BGUI, Triton
