Aros - the new gaming platform

AROS is a reimplementation of the 3.1. 68k amiga-platform with new modern features. The nice thing is it is not only opensource (that means free of charge) it also runs on all major hardware-platforms including X86, ARM, PowerPC and 68k (including old classic hardware, new 68k hardware and emulation). It is also faster than most other platforms and supports modern 2D/3D standards. It is used in form of distributions. More informations and a list you find here. The most important are Broadway, Icaros and AspireOS for X86, aeros combining Linux and AROS, and AROS Vision for 68k.

A description of Icaros is here. It already includes a big number of preinstalled games.

When you want to run 68k classic amiga games you can use “AROS Vision”, the distribution for 68k. You can download from here free of charge, description is here and how to configure WinUAE is here. Then you are ready to start. A page with links to different sources for 68k games is here. Thousands of games wait on you. Many games work out of the box. A list is here. It also runs WHDLoad-Games and Demos. WHDLoad is a software that makes it possible to install former disc based games on harddisk.

There are lots of games like Doom 3, NEXUIZ or Return to Castle Wolfenstein already ported to AROS. A site that is dedicated to AROS gaming with a overview of available games is AROS Playgound.

One new innovation is AEROS, that is combination of AROS and Linux. More information is here.

On the hardware side there are new developments too. One project is a native port to the well known “Raspberry PI”. The thread is here.

One new project is “IndieGO”, a gaming system of the next generation based on modern hardware and new concepts that runs classic Amiga games, Windows games, Linux Games, AROS* and virtually anything else through emulation. More informations about the new IndieGO do you find here

Dedicated hardware for AROS do you find in the Ares Shop
